Eucalyptus is a genus of evergreen trees and shrubs in the myrtle family, comprising more than 700 species. In their natural habitat, these plants grow mainly in Australia, where they form vast eucalyptus forests. They are known not only for their aromatic properties and medicinal effects, but also for their remarkable growth rate. Some species reach more than 50 meters in height in just a few decades.
At first glance, eucalyptus may seem like an exotic plant not suited to Ukraine’s temperate climate. But with the right choice of species and proper cultivation techniques, eucalyptus can quite realistically be grown as an ornamental, essential-oil, or even health-supporting plant. This looks especially promising in the southern and western regions of the country, where winters are milder. In addition, eucalyptus is increasingly being grown in Ukraine as a tub or houseplant, and in summer in open ground, followed by transplanting or insulation for winter.
The species best suited for growing in Ukraine:
Eucalyptus gunnii (cider gum) — the most frost-tolerant, able to withstand short-term drops to –20°C. Ideal for planting in gardens in the South and in Zakarpattia.
Eucalyptus citriodora (lemon eucalyptus) — requires warmth, does well in a container or greenhouse.
Eucalyptus globulus (blue gum) — less cold-tolerant, but grows very well indoors.
Interest in eucalyptus among Ukrainian gardeners is growing — not only because of its striking appearance, but also thanks to the healing properties of the essential oils released by its leaves. They purify the air, suppress pathogens, repel insects, and create a sense of natural freshness in the home or garden.
Choosing the right location and creating optimal conditions for eucalyptus are the keys to growing it successfully in Ukraine. Despite its tropical origin, some species are capable of adapting to a temperate climate.
Climatic conditions:
Only frost-tolerant varieties are suitable for open-ground growing. Cider gum, for example, can grow in open sites in the southern regions of Ukraine (Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Odesa regions) and in Zakarpattia. In other regions, it is better to grow eucalyptus in a container and move it indoors for winter. In summer, the plant grows well at temperatures of +20 to +30°C.
Lighting:
Eucalyptus is a light-loving plant. It needs at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Indoors, the best placement is a south- or southeast-facing window. In greenhouses, supplemental lighting in winter is essential; otherwise, the plant becomes stretched and loses its decorative appeal.
Soil:
Eucalyptus does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged soils. Light, well-drained, slightly acidic substrates (pH 5.5–6.5) are best. For container growing, the optimal mix is:
2 parts turf soil,
1 part leaf soil,
1 part sand,
a little perlite or fine gravel for drainage.
Tip: in open ground, it is worth choosing a raised site where moisture does not accumulate. Eucalyptus is sensitive to root rot, so drainage is essential both in a pot and in the garden.
Eucalyptus can be grown from seed or planted as a ready-made seedling purchased from a reliable nursery. The seed method requires more time and patience, but it allows you to obtain a plant better adapted to local conditions.
Growing from seed:
The seeds are soaked in warm water for 24–48 hours.
They are sown on the surface of a moist substrate without being buried.
A temperature of +22 to +26°C and humidity of about 70% are needed.
Until germination, the substrate is covered with film or a mini greenhouse.
Seedlings appear in 10–20 days. At the stage of 2–3 true leaves, the seedlings are pricked out into separate pots. It is important to begin hardening them immediately afterward: the temperature is gradually lowered and the duration of light exposure is increased.
Planting a seedling:
It is planted in open ground in spring, once the danger of frost has passed.
A 50×50×50 cm hole is dug and filled with light soil with added compost and sand.
A drainage layer (gravel, expanded clay) must be added.
After planting, the plant is watered generously and shaded for the first week. For containers, choose pots with a volume of at least 10–15 liters and holes for water drainage.
Tip: in the first years, it is worth controlling the plant’s growth and regularly pinching the top — this stimulates the development of side branches and creates a compact crown, which is especially important for indoor or container growing.
Eucalyptus is a fairly hardy plant, but in the early stages of development it needs systematic care. This is especially important for plants in containers, greenhouses, or those gradually adapting to open ground. The main components of care are regular watering, feeding, and crown shaping.
Watering:
Eucalyptus does not tolerate stagnant water, especially in the cooler part of the year. In open ground, watering is carried out 1–2 times a week, depending on air temperature. In containers, it is done more often, but only after the top layer of soil has dried. In summer, abundant watering is acceptable; in winter, moderate watering is required, especially during the dormant period (November–February).
Feeding:
In the spring and summer period, complex fertilizers with a higher nitrogen and potassium content are applied once every 2–3 weeks. In the cold season, feeding is stopped so as not to stimulate unwanted growth when light is insufficient.
Pruning and shaping:
To maintain a compact shape, eucalyptus needs regular pruning. Shaping begins when the plant reaches 30–50 cm in height:
Weak and thin shoots are removed.
The tip of the central stem is pinched to stimulate side branches.
Sanitary pruning is carried out in spring.
Training it as a shrub ensures lush, dense foliage. If the goal is to grow a miniature tree, a standard trunk should be formed regularly with support.
The biggest challenge in growing eucalyptus in Ukraine is getting it through the winter. Even the hardiest species may not survive prolonged frosts or sharp temperature swings. So the method of preserving the plant depends on whether it grows in open ground or in a container.
Eucalyptus in open ground:
Suitable only for the southern regions. The root zone is reinforced with a thick layer of mulch (straw, pine needles, compost up to 20 cm). The above-ground part is covered with agrofabric or nonwoven material. In the first 2–3 years, young trees should preferably be covered completely, using frames or other available materials.
Container growing:
The most reliable option. With the onset of cold weather, eucalyptus is moved to a cool, bright room with a temperature of +5 to +12°C. This may be a glazed balcony, insulated veranda, bright basement, or greenhouse. Watering in winter is reduced to a minimum.
Potential risks:
Root freezing due to insufficient insulation.
Overly dry indoor air (it is recommended to use trays with moist expanded clay).
Sudden leaf drop after moving the plant indoors — an adaptation process that is not always dangerous.
Tip: autumn hardening of the plant, by reducing watering and gradually lowering the temperature, greatly increases its chances of wintering successfully.
Eucalyptus is a multifunctional plant with a wide range of uses. In Ukraine it is not yet a mass crop, but its popularity is growing rapidly, especially among supporters of organic gardening, landscape design, and herbal therapy.
The main areas of use:
Ornamental: thanks to its unusual silvery foliage, expressive crown shape, and fast growth, eucalyptus is an excellent decoration for gardens, balconies, and winter gardens.
Medicinal: eucalyptus essential oil is a powerful natural antiseptic. A home-grown plant purifies the air, suppresses bacteria, and supports a healthy indoor microclimate.
Beekeeping: some species are valuable nectar plants. In the southern regions, it is possible to create small plantations for late flowering.
Floristry: eucalyptus branches, especially lemon or silver forms, are widely used in fresh and dried bouquets.
Prospects for growing in Ukraine:
South: open-ground growing is possible with minimal protection.
Central and northern regions: only container growing, with mandatory indoor wintering.
Zakarpattia: southern slopes with a mild microclimate may be suitable for limited experimental growing.
With each passing year, eucalyptus in Ukraine is becoming less of an exotic plant: new varieties are appearing in nurseries, and a community of enthusiastic gardeners is taking shape. This plant has every chance to become a full-fledged element of sustainable and healthy gardening.
